CALLING ALL REDHEADS
in thirty years of spanning the globe : africa . asia . south america
the islands of the deep blue sea . i have never made love to a redhead
there have been soft voiced thai women . gigglely japanese
girls
assertive scandinavian blonds . and various other textures
hues and tones . but never a redhead . though once i came close
a winter night in beijing . the hotel bar . she was from over there
now over here teaching english in a cold damp desolate city near
the russian border . we met yesterday at china ' s great wall
now here we are in the hotel bar . after drinks and food and drinks
again it came down to this . if i knock in the red number three ball
i get to drape all that red hair over myself for the rest of the night
i draw back the cue . aim and shoot . the white ball ricochets
smartly into the red three which rolls quickly across the table
and stops one half inch from the assigned pocket . the redhead
smiles then calls her roommate and weaves her way towards
the exit . at the door she turns and in a drunken scottish brogue says
" yankee doddle dandy . too bad for you . ta ! " . then walks out
