MOON

an after dinner walk on a cold evening is a pleasant experience
there is comfort in putting on gloves . zipping up your fleece
shifting downward a wool hat . the sensation of breathing
in cold air and letting out a cloud of steam feels medicinal

i return to my car . start it . clean the front window and
drive out of the apartment complex . a left turn then right
straight ahead half a mile then left again right once more
and immediately left into the grocery store lot . inside for
green onions and two packages of imitation crab meat

check out stand three is the shortest . a woman is unloading
her cart . a boy in is the child seat . after placing the food
on the conveyor belt she reaches in her purse and brings out
food vouchers . my shoulders slump . processing them is time
consuming . there are signings to be done . several debit
card swipes and much button pushing

i back lean against a counter and look at the womans food
several small packages of meat . oranges avocados peppers
in neatly tied plastic bags . milk . a bundle of corn tortillas

my turn finally comes . slightly annoyed i do not return
the cashiers hello . i pay bag my food and walk out . to the
left is a large red vending machine dvds rentals . the front
displays whats available

one catches my eye . an astronaut is standing . his helmet
is held in hand waist high and his head turned a bit to the
right with eyes cast downward . the backround is a plain
concentric pattern . the mood pensive . desolate

the title is moon
